Maresme is a district (komarca) in Spain, part of the province of Barcelona as part of the autonomous community of Catalonia. Maresme traditionally is a place of fishing and peasant settlements, whose inhabitants were engaged in growing grapes. The main part of the fishing industry is based in Arenys de Mar, which is the first fishing port on the Costa del Maresme. Since the middle of the XX century on the shore began to appear summer residences of wealthy residents of Barcelona, as well as several hotels. Since the mid 80-ies of the XX century, as part of the development of tourism in Spain, significant investments were made in the construction and reconstruction of the coastal cities of the Costa del Maresme.
